The crystalline, porous organometallic structures, commonly known as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), have unique features such as good stability, high surface areas and defined pore structures. Furthermore, due to their hybrid nature, their properties can be tailored to specific applications by using different modification techniques. In particular, Rare-Earth MOFs (RE-MOFs) have been studied for almost 3 decades, taking advantage of the unique nature of these elements. RE-MOFs have been shown to be useful in a wide variety of applications, ranging from chemical sensing to drug delivery.<br/>A great majority of RE-MOFs contain dimeric metal clusters in their structures, an effect derived from the widely used solvothermal synthesis method. These dimers usually result in frameworks with low stability or low porosity. In contrast, multiatomic clusters usually result in improved stabilities and high surface area materials, but their incorporation in RE-MOFs was not achieved until recent years.<br/>The research to be presented focuses on a series of RE-MOFs from the most common structures presenting dimers, to newly developed structures containing fluoro-bridged hexaclusters. The mechanism of formation of these clusters will be discussed as well as the implications that the presence of bridging fluorine conveys in RE MOFs. Specifically, the research will focus on Holmium, a rare-earth that has applications in radiotherapy.
