Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are an ensemble of man-made chemical compounds that are resistant to degradation and known to cause adverse outcomes in human health, wildlife, and the environment. POPs are composed of several chemical classes including pesticides, PCBs, and PFAS which are produced for a variety of industrial, agricultural and household applications. The chemical persistence and adverse effects of POPs have resulted in environmental regulation efforts and decreased production, yet new, unregulated replacement compounds pose a continual challenge to environmental monitoring. Here we evaluate the efficacy of a low-cost passive sampling device (Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking, or SPATT) for simultaneous monitoring of pesticides, PFAS, and cyanotoxins coupled with appropriate analytical detection methods, specifically ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). The IMS-MS platform utilized in this work (Agilent 6560) has been extensively characterized in previous publications evaluating PFAS, pesticides, and other pollutant classes. IMS provides several unique advantages in addition to traditional LC-MS methods including rapid separation of isomeric compounds, mobility filtering of non-targeted ions, and mobility aligned MS/MS spectra. Utilizing these concerted strategies we aim to develop an inclusive and comprehensive workflow for POP analysis using LC-IMS-MS/MS.
