The incorporation of authentic research experiences into the chemistry lab classroom is an effective and impactful teaching method.  Although, this approach can be challenging, it can positively influence students’ interest in the subject, their retention of concepts, and boost their skills-development.  Students who have experienced course-embedded research have indicated an appreciation for the real-world relevancy and cutting-edge nature of the material.  This method also presents the opportunity to update the curriculum to reflect modern scientific techniques and concepts.<br/>     The undergraduate general chemistry curriculum has not traditionally included the topic of biochemistry, so students typically do not gain experience in this subject until later in their academic program.  This presentation discusses an embedded research experience for the second semester general chemistry course that contributes to a faculty member’s active biochemistry research at Central Michigan University.  This introduces students to the biochemistry field much earlier in their academic program and affords them experience with PCR and gel electrophoresis techniques.  Student responses, as measured by lab questionnaires, will also be discussed along with the latest evaluation results in comparison to those from previous implementations of this activity.
