Research is being published at an unprecedented rate. At the same time, the global challenges that we as a society face are looming ever threateningly. In the United Nations' Decade of Action towards their 17 Sustainable Development Goals, keeping abreast of the most relevant cutting edge research developments has never been more important. With so much research information being created, how do you keep on top of it all? Semantic search could hold the key. Traditional lexical search helps you find exactly what you are looking for, but offers little else around even the most complex query. Semantic search, however, is a game-changer. By interrogating a comprehensive and inclusive database of research information using semantic search capabilities, researchers are not only able to sift through the noise to find the most relevant information, but also the related research information that could hold the key to the next big research development. Dimensions achieves this by indexing concepts identified in research information into 24 categories using an ontological framework with up-to-date broad and detailed inclusion of sub-concepts, or "children", as well as the inclusion of synonyms for compounds, manufacturing processes, diseases, genes and proteins, toxicology, and so much more. Imagine you want to switch up the synthesis process of a key chemical product. A lexical literature search would only deliver results that include specific keywords. A semantic search would gather not only what you already know, but also what you didn't know you didn't know. You can, for example, identify an under-researched area that shows promise in patents and that is also being awarded grants. We believe that technology and domain knowledge must be combined with the work of researchers for a collaborative approach to tackling the global challenges that we share.
