Post-use plastic packaging is accumulating at an increasing rate. For fifty years, the responsibility for this plastic waste has been the responsibility of the consumer or municipality, and only 9% of all plastic waste is recycled. Recently, the responsibility for solutions to the accumulation of plastic waste has shifted to plastic packaging producers through a series of regulations. These include extended producer responsibility laws (states assessing taxes on the use of virgin resin) and amendments including plastic waste to the Basel Convention on Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes.<br/><br/>This presentation will focus on the current reality and challenges in packaging mechanical and chemical recycling. Additionally, we will explore potential innovative solutions such as the photocatalytic degradation of packaging.
