The Dietary Exposure Evaluation Model - Food Commodity Intake Database (DEEM-FCID) is used by the EPA Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) to estimate dietary intake of pesticides from food and water. These modeled exposures are used in human health risk assessments. DEEM-FCID uses food consumption data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey/What We Eat in America (NHANES/WWEIA) dietary survey with recipes contained in the FCID to estimate consumption of food commodities for which pesticide tolerances are established. The Cumulative and Aggregate Risk Evaluation System Next Generation (CARES NG) is a web-based model developed by Creme Global to estimate pesticide exposures using the same input databases and does so in a manner similar to DEEM-FCID. As such, OPP was interested in understanding the comparability of the models, including an evaluation of the estimated dietary exposures.<br/> <br/>OPP first employed a ground-up evaluation approach to determine the degree of consistency between the existing models’ input databases. Custom SQLite databases were built using data obtained from the original sources, validated against DEEM where appropriate, and determined as identical to the source data from CARES NG. The newly constructed databases allow for the rapid quality assurance of any input data updates integrated into these (or other) models and the results of the model performance evaluations contribute to increased confidence in the comparability and usability of these models in estimating dietary exposures for risk assessments. CARES NG was evaluated for precision and accuracy relative to DEEM-FCID by comparing pesticide exposures estimated by both models for acute (deterministic and probabilistic), chronic, and cancer exposure assessments. In addition, model usability attributes such as run times and variability convergence for acute probabilistic runs were similar between the models.
