Borylenes are boron(I) compounds with an impressive and fast-growing scope of reactivity. When metal-bound, boron(I) ligands are amongst the most electron-donating ligands known, and have found use as spectator ligands in C-H borylation catalysis. When metal free, borylenes can adopt an electronic structure reminiscent to that of transition metals, and have demonstrated the ability to activate highly inert moieties such as C-H bonds, C-C bonds, and molecular N<sub>2</sub>. However, the synthesis of metal-based and metal-free borylenes often employ orthogonal design principles, the latter requiring stabilization of the the extreme nucleophilicity of the borylene lone pair through delocalization. This lecture will explore new strategies for the design and synthesis of stable metallo- and metal-free borylenes, and their applications in small molecule activation.
