Nickel-rich cathode (LiNixMnyCozO2 (NMC), x &gt; 0.8) has become one of the most promising materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in next generation. Although increasing nickel content can give more capacity, commercialization of ultrahigh-nickel cathodes is still challenging, due to worse cycling and thermal stability. And atmospheric sensitivity makes them more vulnerable and degrades battery performance. Here we present a cathode-siloxane design under room temperature to build surface coating layer on primary and secondary particles of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811). The well-immersed cathode exhibits improved ambient air stability and shows almost no capacity decay even long exposed under air environment. The coated NCM811 also demonstrates better cycling and thermal stability, benefited from the exceptional chemical stability of the polymer skin. The harmful HF in electrolyte, produced via reaction between trace water and LiPF6, is also effectively eliminated. The strategy present in this abstract can help boost the early commercialization of nickel-rich cathode materials for higher performance of upcoming LIBs.
