Organizational chirality on surfaces has been of interest in chemistry and materials science due to its scientific importance as well as potential applications. Self-assembly of molecules has been the most well-known approach for producing organizational chiral structures. While simple, the chiral structures and the areas containing the chiral structures are limited by the inter-play between surface reaction kinetics and thermodynamics. This presentation introduces a new means to create organizational chiral structures by design. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) based nanolithography, in conjunction with mechano-surface chemistry, various chiral structures are produced with nanometer precision, from simple spirals, arrays of nanofeatures to complex and hierarchical chiral structures. The size, geometry, and nature of chirality (e.g., R and S) is achieved in deterministic fashion, with high fidelity to the design. The significance and potential applications will also be discussed.
