Kash Mittal is a true renaissance person because of his interest in a wide variety of areas, adhesion obviously being one of those but surfactants being another. In 1976 he was the organizer of a meeting, Surfactants in Solution, that is still occurring every other year (the 23<sup>rd</sup> edition will be held in Poland in Fall 2022). I am honored to speak at this symposium and will speak about two of his many areas of expertise: surfactants and their relation to adhesion.<br/><br/>Surfactants adsorbed on a surface can increase adhesion because of the ability of a surfactant to change the wetting characteristics of the surface when enable an adhesive liquid to better wet out a surface; however in other applications surfactants can also reduce adhesion because they act as friction reducers. This talk will primarily be focused on the fundamentals of surfactant adsorption to a solid surface for the non-expert. I will also talk discuss my more recent work on the effect of surface roughness on surfactant adsorption.
