Biological actives have demonstrated the unique capacity for biocontrol against many agricultural pathogens and support to plant health. Microbial organisms are being developed for use in more sustainable agricultural treatments of seeds and soil as an alternative to conventional pesticides. Within biological formulations, the viability of bacterial and fungal organisms is crucial to maintain high colony levels throughout the shelf life of the product. Stability of biological actives within a formulation is reliant on factors such as the formulation’s water activity level, protection of the microbial cells, and the chosen solvent. Biocompatible Evonik BREAK-THRU® and silica additives have been shown to support long term stability of the formulation and microbial colony levels. SIPERNAT® precipitated silica additives are used to create a spray-dried biomass powder for use in formulations. Surfactants such as organomodified trisiloxanes and fumed silica AEROSIL® products support both the stability of the formulation and the viability of the microbes. Biocompatible Evonik additives were used in formulations containing Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Trichoderma harzianum. The stability of the formulation and viability, measured in colony forming units (CFU), of the microbials in formulation were recorded over time to determine the shelf life of the product.
