Metalloenzymes in Nature have evolved to provide highly selective proton and electron movement mechanisms in order to catalyze numerous biologically important reactions. An example is the two proton, one electron reduction of nitrite (NO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup>) to nitrosyl (NO). This reaction is a key step in the nitrogen cycle, and nitrite is a known pollutant in bodies of water. The research presented here will discuss our work on nitrite reduction utilizing redox-active pyridinediimine (PDI) ligands with proton-responsive, hemilabile secondary coordination spheres. Specifically, the synthesis and characterization of a family of Mononitrosyl Iron Complexes (MNICs) from the reduction of nitrite will be presented. The hemilability of a series of Fe-PDI complexes was varied in order to probe the reactivity with nitrite. These resulting MNICs were found to have varying spectroscopic signatures depending on the hemilabile group located in the secondary coordination sphere. The mechanism of MNIC formation was also analyzed computationally and will be discussed.
