Antiviral research at Merck has recently identified a number of promising nucleoside-based therapeutics for advancement into the clinic. In preparation for a potential commercial launch, we aim to achieve high efficiency in every part of manufacturing processes for API. In this presentation we will share some of our learnings for developing highly efficient liquid-liquid extractions of water-soluble nucleosides. The underlying priniciples giving rise to the Hofmeister series dictated our choice of salting-out reagents. We contend that the lessons-learned are completely general and can be applied to a broad range of chemical matter in diverse fields.
