Task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) have emerged as environmentally friendly solvents for metal dissolution and novel separation schemes. ILs have advantages over traditional organic solvents with their negligible vapor pressure, wide electrochemical windows, and chemical and thermal stability. TSILs that have carboxylate functional groups incorporated can complex metal centers, increasing the solubility of the metal. Betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([Hbet][Tf<sub>2</sub>N]), is a noteworthy IL that solubilizes both lanthanides (III) and uranium (VI). We are investigating the use of [Hbet][Tf<sub>2</sub>N] as a solvent for separation of lanthanides and actinides. We will further report the expansion of this TSIL family with novel betaine-derivative TSILs, as well as the chemistry of lanthanides and actinides in these IL media for exploitation in separation schemes.
