Application of the new chemical technologies in the pharmaceutical industry poses several challenges.  With the expansion of photochemistry and synthetic electrochemistry over the past 5-10 years, Abbvie Process R&D has made great strides in developing these technologies and providing scalable solutions which meet the needs a quickly evolving pharmacuetical pipeine.  Recently, photoredox chemistry has been appled to synthesize 500 kgs of a key intermediate.  Similary, proof-of-concept studies in electrochemistry have been demonstrated to supply key intermediates at kg/day throughput using flow chemistry.
