Amoebae are widespread in nature water and serve as environment vectors for pathogens, posing a major threat to public health. This study evaluated the inactivation of amoeba spores and their intracellular bacteria and investigated the specific roles of reactive species in the solar/chlorine process. Dictyostelium discoideum and Burkholderia bacterium were selected as a model amoeba and intracellular bacteria, respectively. Compared to solar and chlorination alone, the solar/chlorine process enhanced the inactivation of amoeba spores and intracellular Burkholderia with the 5.11-log10 and 5.39-log10 reduction at 30 min, respectively. Similar enhancement effect was observed in real water in the real solar/chlorine process. The mechanism of enhancement effects on the inactivation of amoeba spores and bacteria is ongoing and will be presented.
