Over the last several decades, advances in asymmetric catalysis have revolutionized the way organic chemists construct molecules, providing selective access to a vast expanse of new sp3-rich chemical space. However, the practical impact of academic research in asymmetric catalysis, particularly in the field of C-H functionalization, has frequently been limited due to heterocycle incompatibility, impractical ligand synthesis, safety concerns, and perceived method translation barriers, particularly in the arena of medicinal chemistry. Seeking to overcome some of these limitations, we embarked on a collaborative journey with the Center for Selective C-H Functionalization (CCHF) and explored several Rh-catalyzed asymmetric carbene transfer reactions in pharmaceutically relevant contexts. Results from these projects will be discussed, including a rare example of an academic collaboration directly impacting a medicinal chemistry project in real time and the implementation of that chemistry on kg-scale
