Cellular interactions drive diverse aspects of human biology, ranging from memory formation to immune function. Breakdowns in cell-to-cell communication also potentiate various pathologies. Despite their critical roles in health and disease, cellular interactions remain difficult to track in live animals, over long time and length scales. To address this issue, my group is developing novel chemical tools and imaging strategies to probe cellular networks in vivo. We have generated collections of optical imaging agents for multiplexed visualization of cell movements and other behaviors. These probes are enabling fundamental studies on cellular networks and providing new insights into immunology, neurobiology, and other areas. Examples of the imaging agents, along with their application in tissues and whole organisms, will be discussed.
