The dried root of Antocleista vogelii were analyzed for different characteristic such as chemical composition and abortifiacient properties to understand its potential health benefits. Anthocleista vogelli is widely used in West Africa as a strong purgative and diuretic. A root decoction is commonly taken to treat constipation, to regulate menstruation and as a vapour bath to treat leprosy, venereal diseases, oedema and scrotal elephantiasis. The root bark extract of Anthocleista vogelli is used against certain pathogenic micro-organisms that cause different infections. The root bark of Anthocleista vogelli was air dried and ground into a powdered form and was loaded inside the thimble. The solvent was heated to reflux 370C for about three hours. The work reports on the chemical composition and abortifacient properties of the three extracts of Antocleista vogelii which are the petroleum ether extract, chloroform fraction and essential oil. The petroleum ether fraction contains twenty six compounds; 1-methylethylbenzene, propylbenzene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene, campesterol etc. While the chloroform fraction (CHCl3) of Anthocleista vogelii contains nine compounds: stigmasterol, 3-acetoxy-7,8-epoxylanostan-11-ol, y-sitosterol, etc. And the essential oil from the root bark of Anthocleista vogelii is shown to contain twelve compounds, namely, stigmasterol, 1-heptatriacotanol, Y-sitosterol, etc. Abortifacient properties of the root bark extracts of Anthocleista vogelli with albino white rat. The forty compounds isolated from the root bark of Anthocleista vogelli have been found to contain medicinal properties which could be responsible for the abortifacient properties exhibited by the plant. The extracts of Anthocleista vogelli should be used in the treatment of typhoid and other related ailments.
