Lithium-sulfur batteries are very promising for vehicles application because of its high theoretical energy density and low-cost. However, the low electronic conductivity of sulfur and the polysulfides shuttling and poor Li metal stripping/plating reversibility in the conventional ether-based electrolytes have significantly restricted its practical implementation. In this talk, I will introduce our strategy to address these problem: 1) cathode design including development of novel selenium-sulfur chemistry and advanced sulfur host; 2) advanced liquid electrolytes to simultaneously suppress shuttling effect and Li metal dendrite formation; 3) development of novel sulfides-based solid-state electrolytes. The underlying mechanism have been comprehensively investigated by a combination of synchrotron X-ray probes and computational modeling. Through these approaches, we are able to significantly improve the cycle life of Li-S batteries in both coin ell and pouch cell configuration.
