With the wide adoption of Environment, Health, and Safety Offices (EHS) at research-intensive universities in the United States, new positions have been created within research groups to interface with them. Usually, the foremost role of this position is to serve as a communication conduit between each research group and EHS. However, it is often the case that these positions hold wider responsibilities within labs—sometimes managing waste disposal, chemical ordering, training record maintenance, and more. There is wide variability in the purviews and structures, not only between but also within institutions. By cataloging the wide variety of differences that exist between these positions, we can begin to understand what makes for a successful lab representative and, by extension, what makes for a safer academic lab environment.
