My first (unexpected) experience with surface wrinkling was in Prof. Russell’s lab during graduate school. I was evaporating aluminum onto the surface of polystyrene for supercritical foaming experiments, and the heat evolved during thermal evaporation caused the metal/polymer interface to wrinkle. Little did I know that I would soon take a deep dive into surface wrinkling during my post-doctoral Fellowship at NIST. In the years following, we harnessed surface wrinkling to build a robust measurement tool for assessing the mechanical properties of thin polymer films. In this presentation, I will highlight the various aspects of surface wrinkling pertinent to mechanical property measurements, ranging from elastic and viscoelastic properties to fracture to residual stress to relaxation dynamics. I will also highlight a few use cases that demonstrate the range of materials and geometries that can be interrogated using surface wrinkling.
