We have developed a new ortho-selective allylation of unprotected phenols with allylic alcohols mediated by acidic alumina. The observed ortho-regioselectivity is attributed to a proposed alumina surface-templated transition state. This presentation will describe the development of this chemistry and its application to the operationally simple synthesis of more than fifty ortho-allyl phenols prepared directly from the corresponding phenols and allylic alcohols.
