Deep ocean minerals precipitate directly from seawater, from pore fluids, from hydrothermal fluids, or from a combination of these sources. The abrupt gradients and reduced conditions that occur at hydrothermal vents result in minerals that form rapidly and may be inherently metastable. We have now known for more than a decade that nanoparticles form in abundance within hydrothermal fluids, however, the role of nanoparticles in cycling metals in the ocean is still emerging. Additionally, the inclusion, persistence, and function of nanoparticles as a component of structurally larger rocks and minerals remains little studied. Interestingly, given slow rates of formation, marine oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals, which may cover thousands of km of seafloor and seamounts, are also typically composed of nanominerals.<br/> <br/>In this special session honoring Professor Michael Hochella, data on nanoparticles and nanominerals in deep ocean marine minerals will be presented in terms of formation and dissolution across the solid-water interface, and the potential for persistence through time.
