Worldwide energy consumption is growing fast in recent years, which demands an increasing use of the renewable energy sources. As a bridge from the fossil fuel-based to renewable fuel-based economy, chemical looping technology has been developed to achieve sustainable applications by producing valuable chemicals and fuels through economically viable redox processes. The chemical looping scheme involves splitting a reaction into multiple sub-reactions facilitated by looping carriers that oscillate between their reduced and regenerated state. In this presentation, the advances in chemical looping with a focus on the fundamentals of metal based looping carriers, rationale for reactor configurations, and design consideration from the process analysis are discussed. Particularly, novel chemical looping applications ranging from hydrogen generation to CO<sub>2 </sub>utilization are elaborated. It is expected that these new advances in metal derivative chemical looping systems will accelerate the large-scale deployment of renewable energy technology.
