<b>Abstract</b><br/><br/>Cardanol is a naturally occurring phenol obtained by extraction and purification of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). It is a naturally occurring phenol that is substituted in meta position by a C15 alkyl chain bearing unsaturations. Epoxidized cardanol (EC) was obtained by a two-step epoxidation. An intermediate was first synthesized using Epichlorohydrin to afford a nucleophilic substitution of phenolic bonds. The second step was performed by an oxidation reaction with m-CPBA. Cardanol polyol (CP) was then obtained by base-catalyzed ring-opening of EC. The effectiveness of the synthesis was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) followed by Proton and COSY Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The obtained products are promising candidates for various applications including the synthesis of Bisphenol A-free epoxy resins and more hydrophobic polyurethanes.
