Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline, multidimensional, porous materials composed of metal ions or clusters interconnected by organic linkers. The structural properties of MOFs — such as pore size, topology, and overall functionality — are customizable through different ligand and metal selections. Incorporation of zwitterionic (ZW) ligands have the potential to enhance adsorption properties of a given MOF via polarization effects. Pyridinium-based ligands show great potential for introducing such ZW effects into MOFs. In this work, an isoreticular analogue of the MIL-53 family (or DUT-5) was synthesized and characterized as a novel ZW aluminum-based MOF using a pyridinium-based ligand. This MOF was investigated for applications in small molecule adsorption (e.g., CO<sub>2</sub> capture, H<sub>2</sub> storage) and removal of water contaminants (e.g., PFAS).
