Polyimide (PI) aerogels have a wide range of applications in aerospace, aeronautics, and commercial industry due to their combination of properties such as low thermal conductivity, light weight, high modulus, and low dielectric constant. The many unique properties of aerogels are due to the open-celled network of the self-assembled, three-dimensional interconnected nanostructure making them ideal candidates for particle incorporation. To this end, the polyimide aerogel composites have been investigated as IR scattering filters. In this research, a flexible polyimide aerogel film made with a combination of diamines [ 4,4'-Bis (4-aminophenoxy) biphenyl (BAPB) and 2,2'-Dimethyl-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl (DMBZ)], dianhydride [3,3',4,4'-Biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA)], and cross-linker [1,3,5-triaminophenoxybenzene (TAB)], was used as the underlying substrate to embed silicon or diamond scattering particles. The doped particle size and amount were varied. The physical, thermal, mechanical and optical properties of the PI aerogel composites will be analyzed and discussed.
