Sulfur dioxide is a major air pollutant in coal-fired power plants. The steady operating of the desulfurization system is significant for pollutant emission reduction, but the control is challenging due to complex reaction mechanisms and unexpected uncertainties, such as model inaccuracy, measurement errors, and load fluctuations. The conventional control scheme makes it difficult to achieve certain practically relevant control goals, including emission and system robustness. To address this issue, an uncertainty and disturbance estimator is employed in the desulfurization system. In this control scheme, the model uncertainties, system disturbances, and other unknown disturbances are treated as a lumped term and then estimated by the uncertainty and disturbance estimator. Moreover, the time delay caused by equipment start-up and adjustment is another control challenge for the desulfurization system. An artificial delay and a virtual plant are introduced into the control law to handle the input delay. This paper emphasizes the improvement of the desulfurization system’s operating performance as well as a new approach to pollutant emission control, which is meaningful to environmental protection. The conducted simulation results in the desulfurization system confirm the uncertainty compensation ability of the modified uncertainty and disturbance estimator. The control scheme outperforms the conventional control method in terms of transient performance and robust performance.
