Scorpoinate ligands are common platforms for studying transition metal chemistry. However, the pendant alkyl groups used to stabilize the lower coordination geometry of these complexes typically have accessible C–H bonds which are vulnerable to oxidation. This has limited their ability to stabilize and characterize highly oxidizing intermediates, such as Co(IV) oxos. We report the synthesis and inorganic chemistry of a new strongly donating scorpionate ligand with pendant trifluoromethyl groups and detail how its chemistry differs from related triscarbene ligand platforms.
