The excessive emission of CO2 from continuous consumption of fossil fuels has triggered serious environmental issues. Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction has been considered as a promising and clean approach to decrease the atmospheric concentration of CO2 greenhouse gas through the conversion of CO2 into valuable carbonaceous products. Recently, single atomically dispersed catalysts (also called single-atom-catalysts, SACs) have been drawn muchattention in heterogeneous catalysis, which is due to their 100% atomic utilization efficiency, as well as their outstanding catalytic performance in CO2 reduction, and other heterogeneous catalytic reactions. However, the Faradaic efficiencies usually drop rapidly along with the increase of overpotentials for achieving high current densities, due to the competing reaction of hydrogen reduction, the inefficient protonation process during formation of intermediates and the low CO2 solubility and diffusivity in aqueous electrolytes. Thus, the systematic study for microenvironment of ECR, including inhibiting the hydrogen evolution, promoting the protonation process and concentrating CO2 in vicinity of active sites, is urgent but lacking. Herein, we improve the electrochemical CO2RR performance by regulating the structure of metal site and microenvironment.
