Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an option to create a carbon neutral cycle. To make this option more feasible, transformation into valued products, e.g. Cx (x &gt; 1) products, is highly expected as essential raw materials using only sustainable energy, e.g. sunlight. This lecture deals with direct transformation of CO2 into Cx (x &gt; 1) products using UV-visible light. The oxygen vacancy of ZrO2 specifically photoreduced CO2 into CO. It was promoted by Ag nanoparticles to split and spillover hydrogen and water (reductant), and further tuned to form methane by the dual site over ZrO2 and Ni; CO was reduced to methane over Ni surface heated as the result of UV-visible light absorption. The combination of ZrO2 with Co reduced at 823 K enabled 13-ethane and 13-propane photoproduction from CO and H2 (Figure 1). Using CO2 and H2, ethylene was formed at a rate of 5.5 μmol/h/g (Figure 2). The consecutive coupling mechanism of CH2 and/or OCOH species over Co(0) surface (85%) into ethylene is discussed as well as the coexisting Co(II)O sites (15%) to absorb visible light using isotope tracing, EXAFS, FTIR, and first principle calculations.
