Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition methodology has applications ranging from chemical sensing to synthesis of complex multilayer structures. The interactions of metal ions with mono- and multilayer amphiphiles have been investigated extensively. Copper has received relatively little attention as a subphase constituent, but is it of potential utility by virtue of its electrochemical properties. We are interested in the formation of Cu<sup>2+</sup>-ODPA monolayers as part of an effort to control monolayer organization in situ and reversibly. The organization of these monolayers can be evaluated by isotherm measurement and Brewster angle microscopy, and monolayer fluidity can be evaluated by means of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) measurements. Using these data we demonstrate the ability to evaluate the thermodynamics of monolayer-metal ion complexation and find the association of Cu<sup>2+</sup> with ODPA to be characterized by a free energy of -15 kJ/mol at room temperature. This finding underscores the fluid nature of the monolayer.
