Even in the upper midwest where cloudy skies are common, installations of roof top solar systems have increased dramatically in the past decade. Improved panel efficiencies, dramatically lower panel prices, and subsidies from Federal and State governments have been very important. The interesting chemistries behind improved panel efficiencies are worth including in a class on the design of solid state electronics.<br/>A review of several systems would help students better understand the need for detailed work to improve Midwest solar system outputs. We installed panel systems on our two homes in Skokie, IL and recorded the choice of installers, panels, inverters, permit details, economics of purchase and subsidies, and energy outputs. This report has approximately 2 years of data.
