Hexamethylenetetramine is widely used in the chemical industry, chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry and material science. In medicine, it has been used as a urinary antiseptic. Amongst these uses it has also been applied to chemical reactions with nitrogen mustards, as a stabilizer for sulfur mustard and recently it has been claimed to be detected in chemical ammunitions mixed with nerve agent GB. In this study, we present “signature” compounds resulting from room temperature and thermal acidic degradation of hexamine in an aqueous and aqueous-organic media.
