Piezoelectrics have been widely studied for applications such as energy harvesters and generators, sensors, and mechanochemistry mediators. However, due to the trade-off in mechanical properties and energy conversion efficiencies, most piezoelectric devices are composites of high-performing piezoelectric inorganics imbedded within low-performing piezoelectric organic matrices. This study shows that by tuning the dielectric constant of an organic matrix, via solvents within an organo-gel, the overall piezoelectric performance can be increased by over 20 times the initial performance of the composite. Additionally, we demonstrate, the performance of the composites can be predicted and varied systematically by altering the dielectric of the matrix material via controlled alteration of the matrix composition.
