<i>Operando</i> X-ray absorption spectroscopy of Ga/alumina in the presence of propane reveals that a fast "deactivation" process is actually a stoichiometric reaction of a gallium hydride with propane, leading to the catalytically active sites. These sites can be regenerated by the appropriate choice of reaction conditions, suppressing deactivation.
