Silver(I) ion has been widely used to separate unsaturated hydrocarbons due to its ability to selectively coordinate with π-bonds of analytes. The separation efficiency and selectivity of unsaturated hydrocarbons is closely related to silver(I) ion stability in order to sustain constant separation performance. The reduction of the silver(I) ion to metallic silver is a major reason for the loss of separation performance, and several factors such as light, heat, and chemicals accelerate this process. Therefore, approaches to protect silver(I) ions from reduction such as the use of stabilizing reagents and protective media have been investigated. Ionic liquids (IL) are a class of liquid salts with negligible vapor pressure, tunable chemical structures, and high thermal stability. Several previously reported studies have utilized ILs as solvents for stabilizing silver(I) ion and as stationary phases for gas chromatography to enhance olefin selectivity. Polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) are a class of polymers comprised of IL monomers and that possess higher thermal and chemical stability than conventional ILs. However, very little is understood regarding the influence of their structural features on silver(I) ion stability. In this presentation, we examine stationary phases composed of different ILs and PILs with increasing silver(I) salt concentration. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) was applied for an assessment of silver(I) ion complexation within the PIL matrix and improved separation resolution. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify the role of PIL in the thermal degradation of silver(I) ion and to understand the interaction mechanism of silver(I) ion in different PILs.
