Heterocycles are of critical importance to the biological activity of many agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. As such, both the synthesis of new scaffolds and the development of new methodologies for preparing known heterocycles can lead to advances in related fields.<br/><br/>The Bolliger group has developed a new strategy to nitrogen-containing tricyclic heteroarenes containing a variety of substituents (Figure 1). Both aromatic and aliphatic <i>N</i>-substituents are tolerated and the cyclization procedure is compatible with a wide range of functional groups. In this presentation we will also discuss our newest results into the mechanism of the cyclization reaction.
