The UVC/permanganate process was recently reported to be an innovative advanced oxidation process (AOP). Compared with UVC irradiation or permanganate oxidation alone, the UVC/permanganate process was more effective for the degradation of 26 structurally diverse micropollutants, with kobs′ ranging from 0.05 to 1.8 min-1. This enhancement was due to the generation of HO* and reactive manganese species (RMnS). HO* was active in the degradation of all micropollutants, while RMnS was selective toward aromatics containing carboxylic groups. The transformation mechanism of RMnS was proved to follow the order as: Mn(VII) → Mn(V) → Mn(III) → MnO2. Mn(V) was the major RMnS for micropollutant degradation under natural conditions, while in situ-formed MnO2 was attributable to the micropollutant abatement, as a catalyst of permanganate, under acid conditions. The effect of water matrix such as pH, alkaline, halide ions and natural organic matter (NOM) on the UVC/permanganate process was investigated. The UVC/permanganate process shows high potential to remove diverse micropollutants with low energy consumption in drinking water.
