Retrospective screening of selected compound libraries for new fungicide starting points resulted in the identification of 5-sulfonyl thiadiazoles 1 for control of Asian soy rust. This presentation will outline the chemical and biological aspects involved in the subsequent exploration of 1 for this purpose. Several examples designed by bioisosteric replacement/scaffold hopping will be highlighted.
