As an abundant renewable carbon source, lignocellulosic biomass is a promising feedstock to produce biobased chemicals. However, the highly complex structure of biomass-derived molecules requires the development of active and stable catalysts that can selectively cleave C-O, C-H, and C-C bonds. We have studied the selective removal of C-O bonds in biomass-derived polyols and acids by deoxydehydration (DODH) and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reactions over bifunctional metal-metal oxide catalysts. The bifunctional catalysts are comprised of Pd particles and MoOx species supported on TiO2. Characterization of the catalytic materials by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFTS) spectroscopy indicates that partially reduced MoOx centers, generated by hydrogen dissociated atoms over Pd, are responsible for C-O bond cleavage. The effect of reaction conditions (temperature and hydrogen pressure) and metal-metal oxide composition (Pd/Mo ratio) in the HDO of 1,4-anhydroerythritol, tartaric acid, and glycerol over Pd-MoOx/TiO2 will be presented.
