PFAS compounds are ubiquitous given that their underlying properties lead to their intrinsic use in a variety of applications from fire-fighting foams, non-stick coatings, and an array of household products. They are also known as “forever chemicals” as PFAS are generally recalcitrant to typical degradation methods and can accumulate in the environment. Furthermore, it has been repeatedly shown that PFAS molecules pose a danger to human health. For this reason, it is imperative to develop materials with which to adsorb PFAS to remove these contaminants from the environment. Graphene oxide is known for its ability to adsorb contaminants. It will be used as the basis in our exploration of how various functionalized graphene/graphene oxide flakes impact PFAS adsorption. Attributes explored include interactions of PFAS with the various functional groups, impacts of self-aggregation between the underlying adsorbent material, as well as PFAS-PFAS aggregating effects.
