Natural photosynthesis utilizes a series of excitonically coupled photo- and redox-active molecules to provide efficient light harvesting and charge separation. This key process is one of the main inspirations for development of artificial solar energy conversion systems which can provide a clean source of renewable energy. Our long-term goal is to determine the key structural features responsible for efficient solar energy conversion by natural photosynthetic systems. The strong electronic interactions between individual light harvesting pigments and redox-active molecules appear to play a crucial role in efficiency of both energy transfer and charge separation. Therefore, we hypothesize that BODIPY (BDP) arrays with multimodal extensive electronic interactions will facilitate the efficiency of energy conversion. Herein we will be utilizing a strongly coupled BODIPY derivative as an energy donor and a chlorin derivative as our acceptor. The arrays will be compared to arrays containing only one BDP subunit as the donor. The details of energy transfer in the resulting arrays have been investigated using a variety of spectroscopic methods.
