Oil-water dispersion is a kind of common multiphase fluid and exists widely in several regions of the industrial production. The study of the stabilization mechanism between oil droplets and solid surfaces in oil-water emulsions is important for practical problems such as anti-oil adhesion, pipeline transportation and oil-water separation. The effects of surfaces and aqueous solution conditions on the interaction forces between the oil droplet and underwater modification surface have been systematically investigated. The measured force profiles were analyzed using a theoretical model based on the Reynolds lubrication equation and augmented Young–Laplace equation, coupled with DLVO and Steric hindrance interactions. The results show that the droplets are more likely attached to the surface under the attractive van der Waals force when the electric double-layer interaction is inhibited in solution. Meanwhile, the increase in the droplet viscosity enhances the hydrodynamic interaction between the droplet and the surface, due to the influence of the internal flow of the droplet. In conclusion, our work demonstrates the effect of DLVO and non-DLVO interaction on droplet and surface stability, which is of potential application in controlling dispersion stability.
