The increasing intensity of economic human activity has resulted in a number of concerning ecological developments, such as climate change and environmental pollution. Consequently, societies and industries around the world need to start an urgent transformational process towards sustainable growth and circular economy. Although the chemical industry has been an enabler for our modern, safe and sustainable life today, it also has to be transformed.<br/><br/>In order to realize this transformation, the development of new technologies has gained increasing importance within the chemical industry. Due to the complexity of the challenge, a holistic technological approach is pursued by Covestro. Firstly, alternative feedstocks ranging from waste gases, biomass or plastic waste need to substitute traditional fossil resources. Secondly, various ways of catalysis including chemocatalysis, electrochemistry and biotechnology are used in order to transform these feedstocks into valuable building blocks for the chemical industry. Finally, process technology and fast scale-up are indispensable components to realize these technologies at industrial scale with high efficiency and safety. Within the talk, the relevance of each module of this holistic approach will be explained and illustrated by examples.
