Copper(II) readily coordinates to amine based ligands like ethylene diamine, 1,4- diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, and 2,2-bipyridine, but will the right combination of ligands and cations lead to a supramolecular square in solution? We present three types of scientific evidence: 1) spectrophotometric titrations of Cu(II) with ligand that can be modeled to ascertain the number and stoichiometry of all solution assemblages, 2) electrospray mass spectrometry data to verify identity, and 3) computational chemistry calculations to verify the stability of supramolecular coordination compounds.
