This talk will highlight the research contributions of Dr. Daniel R. King to the field of transformational soft matter. Dan started his academic research as an undergraduate at Penn State University before attending UMass Amherst where he earned a PhD with Prof. Al Crosby. At UMass, Dan performed pioneering work bio-inspired adhesives and contributed to the development of Geckskin® technology, for which he received many accolades. He joined Hokkaido University as a postdoctoral fellow in 2015 and rapidly transitioned to a tenure-track assistant professor. Dan’s research group, the Laboratory of Transformational Soft Matter, focuses on developing composite hydrogel materials for improved toughness, controllable optical properties, and anisotropic properties, as well as the creation of active matter for soft robotics. Dan passed away in spring 2022 and will be remembered for his outstanding contributions to the field of soft matter, his outgoing and welcoming personality, and excitement for life.
