Nine n-alkyl-o-styrylpridinium salts with different counterions as shown in Scheme 1 were prepared by Knoevenagel condensation of n-alkyl-o-picolinium bromide and terephthaladehyde in presence of catalytic piperidine leading to bromide salts, which then converted to tosylate and triflimide counterions by the metathesis reactions of bromide ion with corresponding salts in common organic solvents. All the salts were characterized by 1H, 13C and 19F NMR and elemental analysis for their purity. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of tosylate and triflimide salts were recorded in methanol by UV-Vis spectrometer, and their labs peaks were at 381-386 nm. Their emission spectra showed lem peaks at 446-453 nm when measured in methanol at excitation of UV light by Fluorescence spectrometer. Interestingly, with the excitation of 365 nm light, they emitted intense light in the solid states that are visible to the naked eye with relatively high absolute quantum yields when compared with those of solutions.
