Supported metal catalysts are used in many industrial processes. Conventional impregnation method usually results in ill-defined nanoparticles with inhomogeneous particle sizes. The synthesis of ultrasmall (&lt; 3 nm) supported metal nanoparticles remains challenging. This presentation will introduce new synthesis approaches for supported metal catalysts by manipulating weak interfacial interactions between metal species and supports. The first strategy involves the preassembly of well-defined heterometallic double complex salts on a substrate. The supported heterometallic compounds can be converted to supported bimetallic nanoparticles upon reduction. This approach can be applied to a large variety of bimetallic and intermetallic nanoparticles. In the second part of the talk, we will discuss a new protocol to deposit colloidal metal nanoparticles onto various catalyst supports by tuning the interaction between colloid metal nanoparticles and supports. This approach is applicable to many types of metal nanoparticles and supports, and can be readily scaled up without affecting the dispersion of nanoparticles. The metal loading can be adjusted by changing the ratio between metal nanoparticles and supports. Furthermore, the adsorption of colloidal nanoparticles mostly occurs on the external surface of catalyst supports, thus eliminating the diffusion control in catalytic reactions.
